- WHITENING AND SENSITIVITY

Pain from whitening procedures is a direct result of dosage and exposure. During the research and development of Liquid Smile, particular attention was paid to creating the right dosage of hydrogen peroxide -- powerful enough to ensure professional whitening without generating sensitivity. Liquid Smile’s common sense approach to whitening also reduces exposure time. Most in-office and take-home tray systems require an hour or more of exposure. Liquid Smile’s single daily dosage reduces exposure time to hydrogen peroxide to just 15 minutes. There are no uncomfortable trays which can also cause gum sensitivity.
How Whitening Works
Liquid Smile is a unique gel formula that incorporates 12% hydrogen peroxide, the most powerful paint-on formulation on the market. As with any whitening procedure, upon application, the hydrogen peroxide immediately breaks down into activated 02 and water. The activated 02 will oxidize the carbon bonds (c=c) of the color/stain molecules in your tooth enamel. By removing the color molecules of stain, your teeth become whiter. Whitening activity of the gel occurs for 15 minutes after each application. Liquid Smile is easy to apply and dries quickly, so it won't rub off or cause irritation. The reason you should avoid intake of food and beverage products that can stain teeth for 4-6 hours after a whitening procedure is that the pellicle -- a natural forming protective film on your tooth enamel -- is broken down during whitening. Because your teeth are semi-permeable, the color molecules from food and beverages can seep into the enamel. It takes at least four hours for the pellicle to re-form on your tooth enamel.
Hydrogen Peroxide and Carbamide Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide is the primary ingredient that whitens teeth. Peroxide comes in two forms for whitening: hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Both forms will whiten your teeth, but hydrogen peroxide is a much more effective whitening agent. The purest form of hydrogen peroxide is food grade, which is used in Liquid Smile’s formula.
Old Gel Technology
Liquid Smile: Professional Whitening.
In early whitening, science had not found a way to stabilize hydrogen peroxide in gel form. As a result, carbamide peroxide, also called Urea Peroxide (CH4N20 H2O2), must first break down into urea & hydrogen peroxide. Then the hydrogen peroxide will break down into activated O2 and water. This activated O2 molecule whitens teeth by removing stain molecules. Carbamide gels take 4X longer to complete whitening activity as does pure hydrogen peroxide gel. Then carbamide reaction chemically takes about one hour. Carbamide gels must also convert to hydrogen peroxide in order to whiten. Its equivalent strength in hydrogen peroxide form is only 1/3. Many take-home tray based whitening products still use carbamide peroxide. This is why consumer are required to wear the trays for such a long period of time, and why the increased exposure time creates sensitivity issues.
New Gel Technology
Now that technology has enabled the stabilization of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in gel form, teeth whitening is actually much safer, faster, and more powerful. Remember, hydrogen peroxide is 4X faster than carbamide peroxide. That means less exposure time and less sensitivity. Once hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth, it breaks down into activated O2 and water. It’s active life cycle is 15 minutes. And hydrogen peroxide is 3X stronger. That means a more powerful whitening performed over a shorter period of time!
